Cat Spay and Neutering: Benefits You Should Know

Why do veterinarians strongly recommend spaying and neutering?

Spaying (for females) and neutering (for males) is not just about population control or preventing unwanted litters. It provides immense long-term health and behavioral benefits for the cats themselves.

Benefits of Fixing Your Cat:

  • Health Benefits (Females): Eliminates the risk of life-threatening pyometra (uterine infection) and significantly reduces the risk of mammary gland cancer if done before their first heat cycle.
  • Health Benefits (Males): Prevents testicular cancer and minimizes prostate issues.
  • Behavioral Improvements: Male cats are much less likely to spray urine to mark territory. Female cats won't experience distressing heat cycles or yowl loudly to attract mates. It also drastically reduces the urge to roam, fight, and potentially contract fatal diseases like Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV).

The Right Time:

Generally, cats can be spayed or neutered at around 5 to 6 months of age, provided they are in good health and meet the weight requirement of roughly 2 kilograms.

Preparation Before Surgery:

You must withhold food and water for 10-12 hours prior to the surgery. This prevents dangerous regurgitation and aspiration into the lungs while under anesthesia. Our veterinarians will always perform health checks and pre-anesthetic blood tests to ensure your cat is medically fit for the procedure.
