Heatstroke in Pets: More Dangerous Than You Think
Heatstroke occurs when a pet's body temperature rises above 40°C (104°F) and the body cannot cool down fast enough. This causes internal organ damage and can be fatal within hours if untreated. Surat Thani and southern Thailand experience average temperatures of 30-38°C year-round, putting pets at consistently high risk.
High-Risk Pets
- Brachycephalic (Short-Nosed) Dogs: Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, Shih Tzus — their shortened airways make heat regulation difficult.
- Flat-Faced Cats: Persians, Exotic Shorthairs.
- Overweight or Senior Pets
- Pets with Pre-existing Conditions such as heart disease or respiratory problems.
- Thick/Long-Coated Breeds: Siberian Huskies, Golden Retrievers.
Warning Signs of Heatstroke
- Excessive, heavy panting with tongue hanging far out and profuse drooling.
- Bright red gums and tongue (may later turn purple or dark).
- Staggering, weakness, collapse, inability to stand.
- Vomiting or bloody diarrhea.
- Extreme lethargy, unresponsiveness, seizures, loss of consciousness.
First Aid (Before Reaching the Vet)
- Move your pet to shade and a ventilated area IMMEDIATELY.
- Apply COOL water (NOT ice-cold water or ice!) to the body, groin, neck, and ears.
- Use a fan or air conditioning. Place wet towels on the body.
- Offer small amounts of water — do NOT force-feed water.
- Rush to the veterinary hospital immediately even if your pet appears to improve, as internal organ damage may not be immediately visible.
Prevention Tips
- NEVER leave pets in a parked car, even with windows slightly open — interior temperatures can reach 60°C.
- Avoid exercise or walks during peak sun hours (10:00-16:00).
- Always provide shade and clean, fresh water.
- Consider a shorter haircut in summer (but don't shave completely, as fur also protects against sunburn).
