Puppy's First Vet Visit: When to Start Vacinations & Schedule
Published on: Apr 7, 2026

Welcoming Your New Puppy: Why the First Visit Matters
Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting milestone. However, during puppyhood, their immune systems are still developing, making them vulnerable to serious infectious diseases. A first veterinary visit for a health check and vaccination planning is the cornerstone of a long, healthy life.
What to Expect During the First Exam:
- Full physical examination (eyes, ears, nose, mouth, skin)
- Listening to heart and lung sounds
- Fecal exam for intestinal parasites (bring a stool sample!)
- Weight check to track growth and development
When Should a Puppy Get Their First Shots?
Puppies receive initial antibodies from their mother's milk, but this protection begins to fade around 6-8 weeks of age. This is the prime time to start their primary vaccination series.
Standard Puppy Vaccination Schedule (Example):
| Age | Vaccine / Procedure | | :--- | :--- | | 6-8 Weeks | 1st DHPP Combo (Distemper, Parvovirus, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis) + Deworming | | 9-11 Weeks | 2nd DHPP Combo + Kennel Cough (Bordetella) | | 12-14 Weeks | 3rd DHPP Combo + 1st Rabies Vaccine | | 16-18 Weeks | 4th DHPP Combo + 2nd Rabies Vaccine | | Every Year | Annual Boosters (Combo + Rabies) |
Note: The specific schedule may be adjusted by your veterinarian based on your pet's health and lifestyle risks.
Golden Rules Before Vaccination:
- Perfect Health: Your puppy must be active, eating well, and have normal bowel movements. No fever or lethargy.
- Home Adjustment: Let the puppy live in your home for at least 7 days before the first visit to reduce stress and ensure no underlying symptoms appear.
- No Bathing: Avoid bathing your puppy for at least 7 days after vaccination to prevent stress or chilling while their immune system is working.
Warning Signs of Vaccine Reaction:
Severe allergic reactions are rare, but contact us immediately if you notice:
- Swelling of the face or eyes; hives
- Difficulty breathing or severe wheezing
- Persistent vomiting or diarrhea after the visit
